Having little time to compose amongst many other projects, a piano sonata seemed a manageable work to undertake as a first complete piece in place of several larger orchestral ideas. Like
Sonata for Pianoforte no. 1 the intention was to begin the body of musical work with something primordial and "pre-time", however this material was ultimately unsatisfactory for that purpose and set aside for the afore-mentioned sonata which replaced it.
This material may resurface in some later work, and does feature perhaps my earliest use of an ostinato device which seems a favored choice of mine going forward. Ironically the sonata which replaced it, while nearly complete, is still unfinished. Thus a complete work has yet to be solved.
